The Numbers Are Alarming

The 2022 NAEP results made headlines for good reason:

  • Only 26% of 4th graders scored at or above Proficient in mathematics, down from 41% a decade earlier.
  • Only 26% of 8th graders reached Proficiency, an 8-point drop in a single assessment cycle and the steepest decline ever recorded in the assessment's 50-year history.
  • Among students from lower-income households, fewer than 1 in 10 scored Proficient or above.
  • The 2025 Long-Term Trend Assessment found some improvement for 9-year-olds, but 13-year-olds showed little recovery in math.
